Abstract: Spontaneous redox processes were studied in the systems Fe(III)-Cl--acetone-methanol, and Fe(II)-Cl--acetone-methanol. In acetone solns. of FeCl3 contg. still another component as methanol, water etc., a spontaneous redn. of the central atom Fe(III) to Fe(II) takes place, while at the same time 1 of the ligands, probably a chloro ligand undergoes oxidn. In acetone solns. of FeCl2 a spontaneous oxidn. of the central atom Fe(II) to Fe(III) takes place while the acetone undergoes redn. Such an oxidn. of Fe(II) takes place only when chloro ligands are present in the coordination sphere. In agreement with the conception of the mutual influence of ligands through the central atom, which conditions the redox behavior of the complex brought into correlation of the compn. and the structure of the coordination sphere, a mechanism is suggested for both processes.
