Synthesis of 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-1,6-anhydro-β-D-galactopyranose

Abstract: From penta-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranose by alkali degradation, phenyl tetra-O-acetyl-β- D-galactopyranoside, m.p. 123-4°, [α]20D -27.0° (c 1, benzene), 1,6-anhydro-β-D-galactopyranose, and finally 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-1,6-anhydro-β-D-galactopyranose, crystals of m.p. 73-4° [α]20D -6.5° (c 1, CHCl₃) was prepd. The yield was 39% which is higher than the most results reported in literature. This method is similar to that of Coleman and McCloskey (CA 39, 5018). The structural scheme of equations is given.
