Abstract:

Recovery of rare elements from electronic scrap is extremely important for economic and environmental reasons. In particular, leaching solutions of end-of-life permanent magnets are considered an important secondary resource. In the present study, the recovery and separation of Nd(III) and Dy(III) were investigated in a single‐element and ternary aqueous solution. For this aim, amorphous tin(IV) phosphate (am‐SnP) was prepared and characterized by FTIR, BET, XRD, and SEM-EDS analyses. The maximum uptake capacity was obtained to be 68.03 mg/g for Nd(III) at pH 4 and 58.14 mg/g for Dy(III) at pH 3. Depending on the thermodynamic data, the sorption of both elements is endothermic and spontaneous. Am‐SnP was found to be selective for Nd(III) and Dy(III) in the presence of Co(II) ions. Nitric acid had 94.3% of Nd(III) and 96.4% elution at 1 mol/L concentration. Nd(III) and Dy(III) sorption were significantly reduced after the second regeneration cycle. Preliminary results show that am‐SnP can be proposed as an efficient and selective material for the sorption and separation of Nd(III) and Dy(III).
