Determination of acetyl and sulfonic acid groups in acetylated and sulfonated poly(vinyl alcohol)

Abstract: Ac and SO₃H groups are detd. titrimetrically and gravimetrically, resp., after hydrolysis with a soln. of 750 ml. PrOH and 30 g. anhyd. KOH. After hydrolysis and decompn. with a mixt. of Br, KI and aqua regia, SO₃H groups are detd. with BaCl₂ and Ac groups by titration with KOH. Alternately, the matter is ashed after hydrolysis and the components detd. in the ash.
