Determination of apparent constants of the transfer of dialkylxanthogen at low-temperature emulsion copolymerization of butadiene with styrene

Abstract: Detn. of apparent consts. of the transfer of dialkylxanthogens (where alkyl is Me, Et, Pr, iso-Pr, Bu, iso-Bu, sec-Bu, amyl, or isoamyl) during low-temp. emulsion copolymerization of butadiene with styrene is described. The consts. depend on the no. of C atoms in the alkyl groups of the mol. of the regulator. This relation can be explained on the basis of the stability of the mol. of the regulator which, contrary to Smith's (CA 41, 1130h) findings, is the main factor detg. the value of the transfer consts. The detd. retardation was evaluated by the reactivity of monomers and radicals according to Bagdasar'yan's (CA 44, 2825i) rule.
