The relation between the viscosity of nitrocellulose solutions and the intrinsic viscosity on mixing of high- and low-molecular polymers

Abstract: In studying the relation of the viscosity of 0.5% soln. of nitrocellulose to its degree of polymerization, calcd. from the intrinsic viscosity [η], it was detd. that [η] increases linearly with the increasing high-mol. portion, and the viscosity of 0.5% soln. increases exponentially with this portion. The relation between [η] and the relative viscosity ητ, can be expressed by the equation ητ = a.eb[η]. The values of the consts. a and b are derived from the equations at 0.05% concn., [η] = 99.180 log ητ -0.395 and at 0.1% concn., [η] = 48.137 log ητ-0.154.
