Abstract: Discontinuous expts. with 0.2% wt. of Co (calcd. on propylene wt.), at 150° and at a pressure of H and CO necessary to keep the stability of Co octacarbonyl proved, that NH3 up to concn. 0.1% wt. had no harmful effect on the oxo synthesis. By applying Co salts as a catalyst, NH3 eliminated the inhibition period necessary for the formation of catalytic active CO carbonyls. At 0.2% wt. of NH3, the conversion of propylene reached 95%, at 0.5%, 56%, and at 1.4%, 17%. The reason for the harmful effect of NH3 is that Co octacarbonyl. and Co hydrotetracarbonyl form stable complex compds. which cannot catalyze the oxo synthesis. This harmful effect can be compensated by an increased amt. of Co, and regardless of the type and the amt. of the olefin the concn. of NH3 should be related to the Co present. At wt. ratio NH3-Co equal to 1.0, the conversion of propylene begins to decrease; at 2.0 it is 72%, at 4.0, 40%, and at 11.0, 5%. The pos. effect of NH3 can be applied up to wt. ratio 0.5.
