Aminolysis of sucrose. III. Reaction of sucrose with an aqueous solution of methylamine

Abstract: cf. CA 60, 4139b. To a soln. of 50 g. sucrose in 100 cc. H2O was added 250 cc. of a 31.5% aq. Me2NH soln., and the mixt. was heated in an autoclave for 18 hrs. at 120-260°. The reaction was catalyzed by addn. of (NH4)3-PO4 (0.25-10 g.). The reaction product was divided by distn. into 2 fractions b. less than or greater than (is not equal to) 160°. The following products were isolated and identified: 1,2-Bis(methylamino)propane, 1,2,4-trimethyl 1,4-dihydropyrazine, 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-dihydropyrazine, 1,2,4,6-tetramethyl-1,4-dihydropyrazine, 1,3-dimethyl-2-methylene-4-imidazoline, 1,1',4,4'-tetramethyl-1,1',4,4'-tetrahydro- 2,2'-dipyrazinyl, and 1,4-dimethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,4-dihydropyrazine. The mechanism of these reactions is similar to the reaction with aq. NH3 previously reported by the authors (loc. cit.).
