Spectrophotometric investigation of hydroxyethyl cellulose treated with sodium periodate

Abstract: Hydroxyethyl cellulose (I) and cellulose (II) were oxidized with NaIO4 for 3, 9, 29, and 52 hrs. until the amt. of aldehyde groups was equal to 0.24, 0.43, 0.62, and 0.67 mole/glucose unit. The ir absorption spectra were measured on the oxidized products in the air-dried state. In contrast to oxidized II, oxidized I shows a characteristic absorption band for the C:O bond at a frequency of 1720cm-1 With increasing moisture (from 4% and 8% up to 12%) in I, the intensity of the band at 1720 cm-1 decreases.
