Dependence of the β-backscattering coefficient on the atomic number of the reflecting material

Abstract: With the spectrometric scintillation method, the dependence of the β-backscattering coeff. (BC) on the at. no. of the reflecting material was studied. The dependence R = f(Ζ), where Ζ is a middle at. no., was detd. in the isotropic radiation geometry with the source of radiation located directly on the reflecting material. The scheme of the measuring app. is given in 3 illustrations, and the correction methods are discussed. With the discriminator, the dependence of the no. of impulses on the discriminator potential was detd. for the primary and for the total of the primary and backscattered radiation. Discriminator curves were then constructed and extrapolated to zero, and the total BC was calcd. The measurements were carried out in a chamber of 0.2 torr vacuum. The layer of the air between the preparative sample and the scintillator was reduced to the point so that its absorption was negligible. The measurements were corrected for the absorption in the sample carrier foil and in the sample itself, and were evaluated mathematically and graphically.
