Polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the 1,1-diphenyl-l-propyl radical

Abstract: The kinetics of the polymerization of Me methacrylate, initiated by the 1,1-di-phenyl-l-propyl radical, formed by the decompn. of 3,3,4,4-tetraphenylhexane was studied. The value of n in the equation for the dependence of the polymerization rate on the concn. of initiator in the range 0.025-0.8%, Rp = k(i)n is = 0.25. The dependence of the polymerization rate on various temps., 15, 30, 40, 50, and 60° at 0.8% concn. of initiator is shown graphically. The total activation energy (E) of the polymerization is 18,200 ± 1600 cal./mole. Under these conditions, the gel effect during the polymerization is depressed.
