Abstract: The formation, compn., and relative stability of Cu(II) complexes contg. cyanate groups as ligands were studied spectrophotometrically in Me2CO. At concns. of 10-5-10-4M the following systems were studied: CuCl2-LiOCN-Me2CO, Cu(NO3)2.3H2O-LiOCN-Me2CO, Cu-(ClO4)2.6H2O-LiOCN-Me2CO, either as isomolar solns. or monovariant systems. The addn. of LiOCN increases the intensity of the absorbance at 475 mμ in CuCl2-Me2CO soln., indicating the formation of a complex in the system CuCl2-LiOCN-Me2CO, with a [Cu2+]:[OCN-] ratio of 1:1.5. The OCN-. group can bond to Cu through N or O and functions as a bridge between 2 central Cu atoms. The addn. of LiOCN to the systems Cu-(NO3)2.3H2O-LiOCN-Me2CO and Cu(ClO4)2.6H2O-LiOCN-Me2CO does not change the absorbance of Cu indicating a lower capacity of the OCN- group to enter the inner sphere of Cu complexes.
