Abstract:  Oxidative decomposition of epimeric nitroheptitols prepared by nitromethane synthesis with D-glucose gave D-g/ycero-D-guloheptose and D-g/ycero-D-idoheptose. In alkaline medium the main oxidative reaction is accompanied by a side elimination reaction leading to D-glucose.
