Reactions of potassium tetrafluoroborate in molten alkali chlorides

Abstract: The reactions of KBF4 in molten alkali chlorides, LiCl, NaCl, and KCl, were studied by the cryoscopic method. In molten LiCl, KBF4 decomps. with formation of gaseous BCl3. In molten NaCl, the exchange reaction between KBF4 and Cl- with formation of KBCl4 proceeds at small concns. of KBF4 only. No reaction occurs in molten KCl. The exptl. results were confirmed by thermodn. calcns. On the basis of the exptl. detd. depression of the temp. of primary crystn. in the system NaCl-KBF4, the equil. const. of the reaction 4NaCl + KBF4⇄   4NaF + KBCl4 and the Gibbs free energy of liq. KBCl4 at 1073 K were calcd.
