Formation of synthetic magnesite by carbonatization of hydromagnesite under hydrothermal conditions

Abstract: The suspension of hydromagnesite in aq. soln. of (NH4)2CO3 was subjected to hydrothermal treatment in an autoclave at 130 and 150° in the period of 3 and 7 days. By x-ray diffraction anal. and electron microscopy it was found that carbonatization of hydromagnesite in ammoniacal soln. leads to the formation of anhyd. synthetic magnesite with idiomorphic rhombohedra.
