Reactions of saccharides catalyzed by molybdate ions. XX. Preparation of epilactose and epimaltose

Abstract: Molybdate-catalyzed hydroxylation of lactal by H2O2 gave epilactose and lactose in 9:1 ratio. Epimaltose and maltose were formed in approx. the same ratio by similar hydroxylation of maltal. Nitromethane synthesis with 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-arabinose followed by oxidative decompn. of nitroalditols gave epilactose and lactose in 3:2 ratio. Under the conditions of molybdate-catalyzed epimerization of monosaccharides, the disaccharides contg. 1→4 linkage (lactose, epilactose, maltose, and epimaltose) were not epimerized. In aq. medium contg. 1% Cl3CCO2H, lactal was converted into 2-deoxylactose in 84.5% yield.
