Structure of bis(triethylammonium) bromochlorocuprates(II) as a function of their composition

Abstract: Compounds  [(C2H5)3NHl2CuCl4 (I), [(C2H5)3NH]2CuCl3Br (II), [(C2H5)3NH]2CuCl2Br2 (III),  [(C2H5)3NH]2CuClBr3 (IV), and [(C2H5)3NH]2CuBr4 (V) were prepared by crystallization from ethanolic solutions. Changes in the composition of the complexes were accompanied by changes in the structure of the coordination polyhedron from a distorted tetrahedron of various degree of distortion up to a distorted octahedron. In consonance with this fact, the d—d transition energies as well as the values of the g factors correspond to a compressed tetrahedron in the case of compounds J, II, and III, and to an elongated octahedron in the case of compounds IV and V.
