Abstract:

Mercury (Hg) is one of the harmful pollutants in the atmosphere, and the determination of atmospheric Hg is a difficult task because of its low concentration in the air. Usually, use of an adsorbent for the enrichment of atmospheric Hg must be needed before an analysis of it in the air, but the conventional adsorbent materials are usually expensive and difficult to be prepared. In this study, a new composite membrane fabricated by electrospinning polystyrene integrated with thioglycollic acid was evaluated for the adsorption of Hg in the air. The morphological structure of the novel nanofiber membrane was characterized and their ability to capture atmospheric Hg was also investigated. The adsorptive capacity of nanofiber membrane for atmospheric Hg can be greatly improved after the incorporation of mercapto-function group, which was four times larger than that of the commercial quartz film. Furthermore, the electrospun nanofiber was easier to prepare compared with the traditional Hg adsorption material, sulfhydryl cotton, and exhibited lower pressure drop. It was found that thioglycollic acid-modified electrospun nanofibers can be a potential adsorbent for Hg in the air.
